Code of Conduct for the students of Symbiosis International University


Dress Code :
All institutes of SIU will define their own dress code which may be formal, semi-formal or uniform. The way the student dress should befit the institute that they represent and reflect the stature and the class of Symbiosis. They shall not be permitted to wear revealing clothes. Students not adhering to above will not be allowed to attend classes & will forfeit the attendance for the classes missed.

For repeated violations after 3 warnings students will be suspended from attending classes for 3 days and the parents will be informed.

Attendance :
 
Every student must have actually attended minimum 75% of the total number of lectures conducted in the class by the faculty. The student will not be eligible to appear for the examination if he / she fail to put in the required attendance. Students seeking placements should have a minimum of 90% attendance. 
The concession in attendance is meant to care off medical leave and leave on personal grounds including the demise of immediate family.
No attendance will be granted for any illnesses. However in extreme cases, the expert opinion of Symbiosis Centre of Health Care and the Director’s discretion will prevail. 

Leave Travel Concession :
 
Since Railway rules prescribe that travel concession will be allowed only for designated vacations, such concession forms will not be made available for travel in between vacations whatever be the reason.

Absence from the Guest lecture :

Attendance for Guest lecture is compulsory. However, each institute of SIU may decide the minimum percentage required in order to accommodate for extraordinary situations. Students who do not fulfill the minimum requirement will not be eligible for placements.


Identity Card : 
Purpose : SIU urges students to understand the spirit of wearing of identity cards and to comply with rule as it is
i) a symbol of belonging to a premiere institution of SIU.
ii) a means of identification in the event of accidents, medical and other emergencies.  

  After admission and the commencement of the batch each student is issued an identity card by the Administration department.
 
The identity card will contain the student’s name, batch details, permanent registration number (P.R.N.), course details, and expiry date along with a recent passport size photograph duly stamped and signed by the Director.
 
Students are required to carry their identity cards at all times. They may be asked to produce the identity card on demand by personnel authorized by SIU for purpose of identification.
 
In case of loss of the identity card, a duplicate identity card will be issued on a written request subject to the approval of the Deputy Director and payment of applicable fee.
 
Identity Card must be surrendered to the Institute’s Administration Department at the end of the course while obtaining final clearance.
 
Students are also required to carry their Insurance Card that will be given to them by the respective institute. Students will not be able to avail the ‘Zero hour’ benefit (cash - less treatment) if they fail to produce their Insurance Card while being admitted to a hospital.

Discipline :
Any act of indiscipline / insubordination or misbehavior by any student will attract severe penalties / punishment.  

 
Use of mobile phones in the academic block of the institutes is strictly prohibited. Violation of the rule will result in confiscation of the Sim card.
  Loud / impolite talk / use of unparliamentary language which offends the listener would be dealt with seriously.
 
Damage to institute & campus property due to negligence / lack of care would attract punishment and compensation for loss caused.
  Instigating or abetting collective insubordination will be viewed very seriously.
 
No society or association of the students will be started without written permission  of the concerned authority      
 
No person shall be invited to address or entertain the students of the college, without the previous written permission of authorities.
 
Consumption or possession of alcohol / drugs and being under their influence while on campus or at functions is prohibited.
 
Theft, Gambling, Sexual harassment, Physical fights / bouts with each other, Smoking on Symbiosis campus, Indecent behavior in public places will be dealt  with severely by the Director of the institute. Any other offence not included in this list will be dealt with on a case to case basis by the Director.   
 
Ragging : Any one found indulging in ragging in any form within or outside the campus, shall be instantly expelled from the SIU. An anti - ragging committee and anti - ragging squad has been established in each institute. Any student having any grievance in this regard may contact the members of the respective committee / squad. 
 
Provisions of The Maharashtra Prohibition of Ragging Act, 1999.
- Ragging within or outside any educational institute is prohibited.
-
Penalty ragging : Whoever directly or indirectly commits, participates in, abets or propagates ragging within or outside any educational institution shall, on conviction, be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years and shall also pay fine of thousand rupees.
-
Dismissal of student: Any student convicted of an offence under penalty for ragging shall be dismissed from the educational institution and such other educational institution for a period of five years from the date of order of such dismissal.
  Eatables are not permitted in classrooms, computer lab, A / V studio, library and office area.
  Use of net connectivity for non - academic purpose is not permitted during institute hours.
  Littering in the campus will attract either monetary or non - monetary punishment.
 
The behavior of the students at all times, within or outside the campus must be above board and must reflect a sense of responsibility.
 
The admission of  a student who had been admitted to the course / institute based on any form of misrepresentation of facts, will be cancelled as soon as such misrepresentation  comes to surface no matter at what stage of the course he / she is studying in. Further, he / she will forfeit the tuition fees paid for the course.
 
Any student misbehaving in class and behaving arrogantly towards the faculty & staff or fellow students will be severely punished. The nature of punishment will depend upon the severity of the offence and will be decided by the Director on a ‘case - to - case’ basis.   

Communication to students : 

 
Any changes affecting the students or class schedule will be communicated to the students via the Notice Boards or other modes of communication. It is important that the students keep themselves abreast of any changes of timetable details and other announcements. 
 
It is the responsibility of students to update themselves with these communications made from time to time, irrespective of whether they are attending or not attending sessions. 

Grievance Cells of every institute: 
Every institute shall form Grievance Committee to address grievances of students. The students should be informed about the existence of such a committee, the members and the procedure of submitting grievances. 

Constitution of Grievance Committee:   
The committee shall comprise
  Director / Deputy Director.
  Senior Faculty nominated by the Director.
  Registrar / Office Superintendent. (convener of the meetings)

Procedure: 
  The aggrieved student would submit in writing his / her grievance to the Registrar / Office Superintendent.
 
The Registrar / Office Superintendent would convene a meeting of members within ten days of receiving the complaint.
 
Where the Director is not a member of the committee, the report of the committee must be submitted to him / her within 5 working days of the meeting.
  The decision taken would be communicated to the student within 3 further working days.

Appeals and Redressals : 
Every aggrieved student has a right to appeal. Such appeals will be made in writing to the Vice Chancellor, within 3 working days of award of the punishment. Delayed appeals will not be entertained.
The Vice Chancellor will consider all valid appeals and has the discretion to mitigate, reduce, cancel or even enhance the punishment awarded. Vice Chancellor’s decision will be final. 

Examination :

 
Students are required to strictly observe the dress code prescribed and carrying Identity cards is compulsory. Students will be sent back if this is not adhered to.
  Students are expected to carry Hall tickets during examination.
  Students are required to carry the required stationary for writing examination.
  Mobile phone should not be carried in the examination hall.
  Students should not resort to any unfair practices as per SIU rules will be applicable for the same.

All other rules of SIU will prevail.  

Library rules :
Students need to follow library rules as specified by the concerned institute of SIU.
The following persons will be eligible for making use of the institute Library. 
  Students belonging to the institute.
  All members of the Teaching staff and Non - teaching staff of the Symbiosis Institutions.
  Members of Symbiosis Society.
 
Others : (Only in exceptional cases) The Head and the Librarian may in their personal discretion allow some other persons to use the Library.

Computer Lab :
 
Net connectivity in the computer lab for e - mailing, chatting, browsing or downloading for personal use during working hours will be considered as misconduct and punitive measures including monetary or other penalty will be invoked if found guilty.
 
The computer lab has extremely delicate equipments and is a restricted area where entry is granted with permission from the authorities.
 
Students need to remove footwear before entering the lab and handle the equipment with professional caution.

Any damage caused due to negligent or unprofessional behavior will result in punitive action as decided by the institute.
